An Annotated Checklist and the Conservation Status of Chondrichthyans in the Adriatic

Although there is a high number of publications listing fish species in the Adriatic, only few have focused on chondrichthyans, while their conservation status has been investigated even less. Thus, this paper aims to provide an updated and annotated checklist chondrichthyans occurring Adriatic waters with presence status. Each evaluated against criteria defined IUCN (International Union for Conservation Nature) Red List Categories Criteria according guidelines national regional level assessments. In total, 60 chondrichthyan from 27 families 42 genera are listed. The list contains 33 sharks, 26 rays one chimera. Assessment reveals that three now considered Regionally Extinct (namely Squatina oculata, Pristis pectinata Rhinobatos rhinobatos). A total 21 assessed as Critically Endangered, 8 Endangered 10 Vulnerable. Of remaining species, six Near Threatened same Least Concern Data Deficient. Considering principal driver decline extinction overfishing, it recommended countries adopt management measures strengthen coordination.
